What is the MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid onboard Ship course?

The MCA Medical First Aid course is a 4-day course for those who are designated to provide medical first aid onboard a ship travelling more than 60NM offshore (and unto 150NM). The knowledge and skills gained through this course will enable you to apply immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness.

This course satisfies the requirements as set out by STCW (95) Section A-VI/4-1. In addition, this course could be extremely useful for any seafarer undertaking long offshore passages.

What is covered in the MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid

The course is a mix of theoretical and practical sessions which will include – understanding the body structure and functions relating to immediate first aid, knowing proper use of items within a first aid kit.

You will learn about procedures for maintaining hygiene on board and preventing and managing illness.

You will cover first aid relating to chest pain, breathing problems, hypoglycaemia and poisoning, learn about internal and external bleeding and demonstrate their management, be able to describe types of musculo-skeletal injuries and their management as well as injuries related to the head, chest and abdomen and demonstrate their management.

You will be able to identify casualty requirements and rescue techniques.

4-day Course Format

The course runs over 4 consecutive days in Warsash with our partners KTY. There will be continual assessment and oral questioning to determine your level of understanding. There are no pre-requisites to take this course, minimum age 18 years old.

You will be awarded with the MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid certificate.
