The MCA Proficiency in Medical Care (STCW) is a 5 day course for seafarers who are designated to provide medical care onboard ship. The knowledge and skills gained on this course will enable you to provide medical care to the sick and injured whilst they remain on board and to participate in providing co-ordinated medical assistance to ships.
This course satisfies the requirements of STCW (95) Section A-VI/4-2 (and was formerly called the Ship’s Captain’s Medical.)

MCA Medical First Aid

The 5 day course will be held in a dedicated training room in Warsash, and run approximately 9am – 5pm each day. Please note you must already hold the MCA Proficiency in Medical First Aid certificate (4-day course) to attend this course.
This course is run in association with KTY yachts.
During the course you will learn about participating in co-ordinated medical assistance, learn how to describe the assessment and care of someone suffering illness at sea including monitoring and charting vital signs and how to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
You will be able to demonstrate how to deal with medical situations involving cardio-vascular and respiratory systems, urinary, gynaecological and gastro-intestinal conditions, including fitting a urinary catheter, ear, nose and throat, dental and ophthalmic conditions, communicable and sexually transmitted diseases.
You will know the use of medicines on board including storage and administration, the correct procedures for transporting ill and injured persons and how to manage death at sea.
